Statement of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois on Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law
The Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) stands firmly in support of judicial independence and the rule of law as foundational pillars of our democracy and legal system. These principles ensure that justice is administered fairly and impartially, free from external pressures or political influence.
As an organization committed to the common good, the fair administration of justice, and the advancement of women’s rights, the WBAI believes that any effort to intimidate judges or undermine the judiciary threatens not only individual rights but the integrity of the legal profession and our system of laws.
We echo the warning voiced by the Chief Justice of the United States in his 2024 Year-End Report: attempts to pressure or punish judges for their rulings are inappropriate and must be vigorously opposed. We also reject actions that seek to penalize lawyers or firms for whom they represent or the causes they champion. These efforts are incompatible with a legal system that values equality, fairness, and due process.
As we have seen throughout history, the rule of law is essential to protecting the rights of all people—especially those most vulnerable to injustice. Women, and those who have long faced systemic barriers, rely on a strong and independent judiciary to vindicate their rights and uphold the principles of justice without fear or favor.
We call on the legal community—lawyers in all settings, judges, law students, and bar associations—to speak out in defense of our courts, our colleagues, and our constitutional values. Silence in the face of intimidation is not an option. The WBAI remains steadfast in its mission to promote justice, uphold the dignity of the profession, and protect the rights of women and all who depend on the fair and independent rule of law.
Now is the time to stand together.
