Emily N. Masalski
Counsel - Sustainability & Trade // Eaton Corporation
Please provide a description of your practice.
My legal experience includes working as a government attorney in New York City nearly 20 years ago to rising through the ranks to law firm partnership in Chicago. I currently serve as Counsel – Sustainability & Trade for Eaton Corporation, a global power management company. I handle regulatory compliance matters and help drive environmental, health and safety (EHS) initiatives. I also manage a variety of North America and Mexico real estate matters.
Why are you a member of the WBAI?
In 2015, I was selected for the 2015-2016 WBAI Leadership Institute. It was an outstanding experience that helped me grow as a law firm partner and bar leader. At the time, I was also serving as Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Women and the Law and previously served on the Chicago Bar Association’s Alliance for Women Executive Committee. These three organizations continue to collaborate and help women lawyers succeed in law and in life. In May 2024, I traveled with WBAI to Washington D.C. for the U.S. Supreme Court admission ceremony. It is my favorite WBAI memory.
What do you think is the best way to empower women in law?
The WBAI Leadership Institute taught me about the Grit and Growth Mindset. Together, we participated in the ABA Commission on Women’s Grit Project and developed skills to adapt to and overcome obstacles in the workplace. As noted in the Grit Project materials, the possession of “grit” entails perseverance, dedication and a strong drive and commitment to achieve one’s goals. A “growth mindset” is the belief that our abilities are flexible and adaptable. The toolkit and related training programs are still relevant today.
What are you most looking forward to in the following year, personally/professionally?
I have two children (ages 13 and 10) and help coach the soccer team at their school. I love being on the sidelines with them. I also serve as Treasurer and on the Board of Governors (Cook County) for the Illinois State Bar Association. I recently announced my candidacy for Illinois State Bar Association Third Vice President and have been traveling the state as part of my campaign.
Tell us something interesting about you.
I was in a fantasy football league and had a blast competing against my law firm colleagues. In 2022, my team won the league championship.
