Job Summary
The Pro Bono and Public Interest Coordinator is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of pro bono legal projects, designed to increase law student and alumni participation in community service through the Law School’s Pro Bono Service Initiative. This position will also support the work and goals of the Public Interest program generally, including providing public interest counseling to students. This individual reports to and works closely with the Senior Director of Public Interest Law & Policy, and interacts with various public interest law community agencies and with a number of Law School and University-wide departments. This full-time position is part of the Office of Career Services.


Match student-participants with Chicago-area organizations to engage in pro bono opportunities, and with non-local pro bono opportunities that may be handled remotely
Research, manage and promote new pro bono and community service opportunities to students
Collaborate with the student Pro Bono Board and student organizations to develop and maintain student-run pro bono and community service initiatives
Develop trainings for students on topics including confidentiality, conflict of interest, and legal ethics
Conduct information sessions and speaker panels on pro bono projects
Coordinate and communicate with community supervisors of students performing pro bono work
Administer the Pro Bono Pledge, which asks all law students to perform at least 50 hours of pro bono service before they graduate
Counsel students and pro bono supervisors regarding appropriate pro bono projects and appropriate student work
Direct, coordinate and maintain an accurate record-keeping system to track student pro bono projects and hours
Provide reports to determine graduation recognition
Plan events, including the Pro Bono Recognition Luncheon, to recognize graduating students who completed the Pledge
Collaborate with the Senior Director of Public Interest Law & Policy to prepare agendas, materials, and reports for the Public Interest Faculty Committee and for other requests for data that arise
Engage in university and public relations, including integration with the bench and bar, to maintain visibility of the Pro Bono Service Initiative and support a general environment conducive to student development of new pro bono projects
Assist with a wide range of career counseling, coaching, outreach, and programming services for public service-directed students and alumni
Maintain records to assist the Career Services team in providing comprehensive services to students and alumni and in fulfilling internal and external reporting obligations
Represent the Office of Career Services to internal and external audiences
Develop metrics for tracking progress against goals and reviews goals periodically with the internal team and recruiters. Enforces recruiting guidelines with employers and students. Administers in-house recruiting programs. Focuses on targets for both the number of opportunities and the number of interns.
Cultivates new relationships with companies that do not have an existing formal relationship with the University
Performs other related work as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.—
Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.—


Preferred Qualifications



Master’s or J.D. degree

Three to give years’ professional experience in public interest law practice, experience in legal aid or legal environments, non-profit administration, or higher education
Preferred Competencies

Demonstrated high level of initiative, and the desire to work closely with students and help them use their legal training to serve others
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and verbal/written communication skills
Strong public speaking and presentation skills
Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines, take initiative, work independently and as a team member, and interact comfortably and positively with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students and the public
Ability to respect the confidentiality of counseling and institutional information
Ability to perform efficiently and with a positive outlook even when under stress
Ability to work collaboratively within a team and a team approach to interpersonal interactions and problem solving
Ability to work independently and to exercise considerable judgment and discretion
Ability to work occasional evening, weekend, and early morning hours
Ability to travel as needed
Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research and databases
