The Legal Content Director leads Illinois Legal Aid Online’s (ILAO) Content Team, including an Associate Director of Legal Technology, Legal Content Manager, and a Content Promotion and Translation Manager. The Content Team delivers reliable, understandable solutions to people with civil legal problems and attorneys who provide free and low-cost legal services. Content is core to ILAO’s purpose; it informs, educates, empowers, and guides individuals and families with legal problems to solutions. The Legal Content Director supervises and directs a 3-person content team, supported by dozens of volunteer subject matter experts, and is responsible for creating and implementing content strategies that align with ILAO’s mission and its user’s needs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Create and oversee implementation of ILAO’s content strategy – 30%

  • Create and oversee implementation of content strategies that meet user needs and organization goals
  • Help External Relations Director to create and oversee implementation of an annual master communications calendar that supports product and service goals for each fiscal year
  • Understand the impact of ILAO’s content, where it is strongest and where it needs improvement
  • Partner with product team to define user models and interfaces for new and updated features and functionality
  • Keep current with emerging technologies and content management best practices
  • Create mutually beneficial partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including the tech/product team, and local and statewide collaborations related to legal aid, legal technology, language access, plain language and other topics relevant to ILAO

Govern ILAO’s content so that it meets quality standards for accuracy, readability, and usability – 30%

  • Develop metrics and reporting framework for evaluating content performance; oversee data-based improvements to content
  • Oversee tracking of law, policy or program changes that may affect ILAO’s content or users
  • Develop and enforce content governance standards, including style guide, and content management processes and workflows
  • Apply and enforce best practices for search for optimal user experience (UX) and content discovery
  • Oversee evaluation of and improvements to new and existing content; work with product team on user testing as needed
  • Collaborate with product team to ensure content and design meet business objectives and user needs
  • Oversee knowledge management database for the content team; ensure it is properly maintained
  • Work with the product team to improve front-end (user-facing) and back-end (content management) functionality and user experience

Lead content team to publish high-quality, user-centered content – 30%

  • Motivate, direct and supervise the content team in the development and improvement of legal content on ILAO’s digital channels, from conception to evaluation
  • Hold content team accountable for content quality and meeting all publishing and production deadlines
  • Support Legal Content Manager to motivate and recruit Legal Content Volunteers, translators, vendors and interns
  • Conduct yearly performance appraisals of content team members
  • Serve as the ILAO representative for one or more of the Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission’s statewide forms subcommittees

Other activities – 10%

  • Help identify and pursue potential funding sources and participate in grant proposals and reporting
  • Participate in fundraising activities, events, and campaigns
  • Participate in staff and other administrative meetings
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Law degree (J.D.), or journalism or marketing degree with some legal experience, required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience publishing digital content (does not have to be full-time)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience supervising others, such as staff, volunteers and contractors
  • Expertise distilling complicated concepts into understandable (plain-language), actionable resources
  • Expertise with project management
  • Experience developing and effecting content workflows and using a content management system
  • Experience developing and implementing strategies that address how content will meet business goals and user needs, and the people, processes, and tools to get it done
  • Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools to evaluate content performance
  • Understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) and information architecture
  • Proficient in using computers and mobile devices, including fluency in using the Internet, mobile apps, and Google Apps, with the ability to quickly learn new software programs

Preference is given to candidates with:

  • Illinois law license
  • Legal aid practice experience
  • Experience working with translation systems and workflows
  • Structured content / API experience
  • Experience with Drupal
  • Experience using legal technology, such as form preparation programs and case management systems
  • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish or Polish
