On July 25, 2025, the International Ballroom at the Hilton Chicago was filled with over 500 attendees to honor seven leaders in the legal community on their pro bono and public service efforts. The highlight of the event was listening to each awardee share in their own words how they strive to advance justice and protect legal rights despite their busy professional obligations. The awardees were rightfully lauded for their work to ensure a more fair and efficient system to those suffering domestic violence, housing instability, and illiteracy. The audience cheered after Judge Veronica O’Malley shared her own call to action after receiving the Justice Thomas L. Kilbride Public Service Award. This award honors attorneys and judges who are catalysts for improving the access of the justice system. Since 2019, Judge O’Malley has overseen the management of the Self-Represented Litigant Family Courtroom. The practice of family law often involves procedurally complex and emotionally charged matters which at times can be difficult to manage for even the most seasoned practitioner. Judge O’Malley has tailored her courtroom to serve all Self-Represented Litigants expeditiously and economically. The WBAI is proud to continuously sponsor this event to honor those tirelessly working to advance justice.
