Every September, attorneys and legal professionals from throughout the Chicagoland area get together for one night to raise money for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (“CVLS”), in its annual Race Judicata – 5k Walk/Run in Lincoln Park.
This year would have been CVLS’ 26th year hosting Race Judicata, but like most large events set for 2020, Race Judicata has been canceled due to COVID-19. In 2019, Race Judicata had over 5,000 participants and raised over $230,000.00 to support CVLS. For over 55 years, CVLS has provided Chicagoland residents pro bono civil legal aid, thanks to over 2,400 volunteer attorneys who donate legal services to low-income residents. Race Judicata is one of the largest fundraising events for CVLS and enables it to maintain its commitment to the community and social justice in providing free legal services.
WBAI has been a long-standing supporter and sponsor of Race Judicata, and always has a strong showing with a team of runners/walkers. While Race Judicata has been canceled, it is critical that CVLS raise funds to continue to support Chicagoland residents. Please consider making a donation to CVLS online and if you/your company had been a sponsor this year, please contact Matthew Pollock, Communications Director for CVLS, and consider renewing or rolling-over your sponsorship to 2021. Despite the cancellation of Race Judicata, CVLS has been able to raise $90,000.00.
Finally, not only is Race Judicata a fundraising event, it is a competition. Every year, participant times are tracked and individual results are displayed on the Race Judicata website. In 2019, the fastest male lawyer was Derek Holland, finishing a 3.1 mile run in 16:57; the fastest female lawyer was Sarah David, finishing a 3.1 mile run in 18:15. These are sub 6-minute miles and impressive times. Moreover, there are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place titles for overall and age groups: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+.
That’s right – 70+! So, there’s no time like the present to get outside, enjoy this beautiful weather and start training. You’ve got a year in advance; remember to pace yourself, stretch before and after, and drink plenty of water. Map My Run by Under Armour is one of the best apps to use that helps track your mileage, time, and splits; plus, it’s free. See you at Race Judicata 2021!
