Description of your practice:
All family law matters are unique. Whether a party is facing issues involving a current or past spouse or partner, or experiencing child-related conflicts, clients want options and the education they need on how to get to the next stage of their lives. What I have found in my 14 years of practice is that whether the matter involves a divorce, parentage action, prenuptial agreement or any other family law issue, it is paramount that I provide choices to my clients so that they can feel in control of their future, not only from a financial perspective but also an emotional standpoint. That can be as simple as forgoing a smaller issue for a larger issue to conserve costs to the more complex decision of choosing mediation over litigation or vice versa.
Why are you a member of the WBAI?
Since I joined the WBAI more than eight years ago, I have found the organization to be an invaluable resource not only for networking and educational opportunities but also for professional enhancement for women and men. I have also had the honor of co-chairing the Domestic Relations Roundtable for eight years, which I am proud to say is widely touted as the most engaging CLE out there! This sold out event is attended by both the domestic relations bar and bench, along with other professionals looking to get a unique look at the issues facing domestic relations professionals.
What are the qualities you have seen and admired in a senior female attorney you know?
Women attorneys have it complicated. If you are assertive, you are “pushy” and if you step back, even strategically, you are viewed as “weak.” The most successful female attorneys I know command the room with their knowledge of the law, have poise and presence, share their experiences for truly non-altruistic purposes and are great business people. I try to keep these characteristics in mind whenever I can both personally and professionally.
What are you most looking forward to in the following year, personally/professionally?
I feel like I am at a pivotal point in my career, where my knowledge of the law and business acumen are finally converging. I look forward to continuing to develop myself professionally and build solid relationships with my colleagues and clients. My children (age 6 and almost 9) are also at an age where traveling to new places will be incredibly memorable! I am excited to travel with them and my husband and build great memories.
Tell us something interesting about you.
Law is not my first career. I formally worked in the public relations industry for seven years where I touted all types of interesting consumer products. I have fantastic memories of going to the Super Bowl in New Orleans with Jerry Rice and watching Laila Ali give a talk at Madison Square Garden about the health benefits of milk. I even attended the world’s largest twin gathering in Twinsburg, Ohio! My stories could go on and on.
