Emily Masalski: Why I support the Equal Rights Amendment

I support the passage of the federal Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). In 1923, Alice Paul drafted the ERA. In 1972, after Congress passed the ERA and sent it to the states for ratification, Alice Paul began a set of charm bracelets. She added charms engraved with the date that each state ratified the ERA. Not enough states voted to ratify the ERA, so it never became part of the U.S. Constitution.

Our children should have a future where their rights are constitutionally guaranteed. Let’s add Illinois to Alice Paul’s ERA charm bracelet. It is time to put the ERA in the U.S. Constitution.
