Beyond the Crown: Lessons in Advocacy, Confidence, and Professionalism

By: Tracey L. Schroeder

On March 19, members of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois gathered at the Chicago Bar Association for the
engaging and thought-provoking Professional Responsibility CLE, Unexpected Lessons for Lawyers from Pageantry.

The program featured WBAI Director Kristine Schanbacher as a panelist, where she shared how experiences in the pageant world can cultivate practical skills that translate directly to success in the legal profession. Through candid discussion and personal insight, attendees explored how confidence, poise, professionalism, and effective communication developed through pageantry can enhance performance in high-pressure legal environments.

The CLE highlighted important lessons in public speaking, maintaining civility under pressure, challenging stereotypes, and overcoming imposter syndrome — all essential skills for effective advocacy, negotiation, trial practice, leadership, and business development.

Following the program, attendees continued the conversation during a reception with colleagues and peers, further fostering connection and professional growth within the legal community.

The WBAI was proud to support Kristine’s participation in this unique and inspiring program and celebrate the valuable perspective she brought to the discussion.
