On April 20 and 21 over 150 lawyers and judges from all over Illinois gathered on Bourbon Street to network and learn together. Practitioners from Chicagoland to Springfield, Waterloo to Harrisburg, Kankakee to Champaign and everywhere in between attended lectures on wide-ranging family law topics. These topics included divorce and parentage involving same-sex couples; jurisdictional questions and the UCCJEA; an update on recent case law; child support calculations and the deviation from child support and maintenance guidelines.
Attendees heard about shared parenting from the perspective of clinical psychologist Sol Rappaport; appellate issues; 2-1401 and 2-1301 petitions; relocation and removal of children; property division, and the valuation of offshore businesses with the perspective of an attorney who practices in the United Kingdom.
Outside the classroom, participants were able to enjoy the cuisine and culture, including attending jazz performances and indulging in beignets and muffalettas.
