The City of Aurora is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel. The City of Aurora is the second largest city in the State of Illinois with a population of over 200,000. Under the direction and supervision of the Corporation Counsel, the Assistant Corporation Counsel advises and represents the City in legal actions; researches legal questions, reviews contracts, and drafts ordinances, resolutions, and legal opinions. The ideal applicant will possess comprehensive knowledge of the laws specifically impacting the operation of units of local government in Illinois, including, but not limited to, the Freedom of Information Act, as well as familiarly with labor and employment and land use matters. The applicant will also possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and be comfortable briefing and advising City elected officials and staff on complex legal matters. The position requires the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with City officials, attorneys and other professionals, law enforcement officials, and the general public. Attendance at some evening meetings is required. Requires a license to practice law in the State of Illinois and five (5) years legal experience as an attorney working in local government law and civil litigation. Previous experience as an assistant city or state’s attorney focused on these areas of law is desired. Must possess valid driver’s license. Starting annual pay range is $85,051-$94,868 or commensurate experience and an excellent benefit package offered.
